Emergency Contingency Plan

At Summit, we want to be highly prepared for whatever circumstances may occur. The events of September 11th reinforce our responsibility to always have an action plan ready to serve your best interests. We have developed a contingency plan which insures you that in the unlikely event of a threat to the school or New York City we are able to safely care for your children at all times.

Should there be an emergency situation, we are prepared to keep your child at school for an extended period of time until we are able to reconnect them with you or with family and friends you so designate. If there is no alternative, we are able to offer food and overnight care. We have capable staff who will be on site. You have our assurance that we will use every possible  accommodation to make your child feel safe and secure.

In the event of an emergency, we will use our K12 Alerts system to communicate with you via voice message, text message and email.

Transportation Information

Welcome back to the new school year. We hope your summer was an enjoyable and restful one for you and your child. We would like to share some information with you concerning your child’s transportation to and from school:

l. Please have your child ready in the morning at the time specified to you by the bus driver. Drivers are required to wait only two minutes for children who are not ready. Matrons are not permitted to leave the school bus to get a child.

2. If you plan to pick your child up from school in the afternoon, kindly send a note to your child’s teacher, or call the school to inform them. Any child who does not have a note (or phone call) explaining that a parent/guardian will come to school to pick him/her up, will be placed on his/her school bus at time of dismissal. PLEASE NOTE: PARENTS MUST COME TO THE SCHOOL OFFICE.

3. The school cannot make arrangements for a child to travel on another child’s bus. If arrangements are made for one child to visit another child’s home, all of the transportation arrangements must be made by parents, the Office of Pupil Transportation, and the bus company. PLEASE NOTE: On half-days (see school calendar) your child will go home on his/her regularly scheduled bus.

4. Please expect that your child may be a few minutes later returning home the first few days of school. It will take some time before drivers have their schedules worked out.

5. CHANGE OF DROP: It may be possible to have your child’s school bus drop him/her off at a location other than home. To arrange for this, you must contact O.P.T. 7l8/784-3313, for a “P.M. Drop-Off Form.”  This form outlines the procedures you should follow. Please notify school of start date and end date of all after school drops.

6. CHANGE OF ADDRESS: It is important that you notify the school office as soon as you know when you will be moving and what is your new address so that your child ‘s busing is not interrupted. It normally takes ten school days to make changes in school bus routes.

7. PROBLEMS: Should you experience problems with your child’s school bus, you can:
(a) call the bus company to report the problem.
(b) call OPT at 7l8/784-33l3  or HOTLINE: 718/392-8855
(c) report problem to Larry Litwack, Dean of Students (Upper School)
